It's Movie Night!

So there we were; little tykes full of Olympic fever at the dawn of the 1980's, ready to get an eye-full of Summer Olympics when The Soviet Union got all grabby in Afghanistan. Jimmy Carter made a big deal of threatening to boycott the Moscow Olympics and when the Soviets refused to budge he made good on his promise. A great move for international politics, a serious blow to kids intent on watching some track and field events from behind the iron curtain. This also blew NBC's plans to broadcast a bunch of animated shorts they had commissioned from Lisberger studios (the same guys that later made Tron). These animated shorts were later put together as the animated film titled Animalympics.

Apparently I Don't Know Rock & Roll

Posted by Justin | Comments (0) »

But the folks at Asian-horror-movies.com do. I tried six times using six different methods to encode my copy of Wild Zero to embed it here for your enjoyment. I failed. I'm pretty sure that it has to do with the weird frame rate at which my copy is ripped, but I'm somewhat ignorant of that stuff, so we may never know. Instead, you can hop on over to the Asian horror emporium and get your Wild Zero on.

As a bit of consolation, I offer this .rar file containing the Wild Zero soundtrack. It's got some really good stuff. Charlie & The Hot Wheels doing 'Little Jet Willys' is particularly awesome as is Oblivians doing "Nigger Rich'. For a little taste, dig this MP3 of Charlie & The Hot Wheels singing Sexy Sweater Girl.

Hey Mister, Do You Know 'Rock 'n Roll'? *updated*

Posted by Justin | Comments (1) »

Failure from top to bottom. Apparently something bad happened whilst encoding last nights movie to flash. It got really blocky, the audio got out of sync, it took forever to load, it made everyone mad, there was weeping, etc. I'm going to re-encode it tonight and hopefully get it posted in better shape tomorrow.

**** Sad news for folks using Explorer. I can't seem to get the flash player working for you guys. Everything is super peachy with Firefox and it looks to be a go with safari too. Firefox in Explorer emulation mode is all wonky too. Looks like it's a trip to the netflix queue for you.*****

Great Happiness Space

Posted by Justin | Comments (2) »

This one is a real treat. Lonely people looking for companionship and healing in a modern context. The streets and high rises of Osaka can leave a person feeling run down and lonely. It's up to the hosts and hostesses of the city's many clubs to make it all better. A genuinely moving documentary.

It Takes a Worried Man

Posted by Justin | Comments (0) »

Since we all had such a good time watching The Men Who Make The Music, we're going to dip another toe into the Devo oeuvre. This time around it's Human Highway. While the late 70's and early 80's saw a lot of ill-conceived and poorly executed vanity projects, this little number might take the cake. Co-written and co-directed by Neil Young and Dean Stockwell (also known as: that scruffy looking harvest moon guy and the other dude from Quantum Leap) this flick is obviously the result of a lot of people owing Neil Young a favor. While the sets look like cardboard cast-offs from an episode of The Muppet Show and the characters are mostly unlikeable, it offers quite a few things to love. Keep you eyes open for Booji Boy surviving the apocalypse, Dennis Hopper as a short order cook, a heaping helping of early 80's stereotypes, and a gratuitous bit of performance from a Neil Young concert.

We may never know exactly how this nugget of madness came to be, so let's suspend our disbelief for a little while and suckle at its teat of weirdness.

Sorry this one took so long to post. It was supposed to show up automatically at 7:30 this evening, but for some reason its time stamp changed to 7:00pm July 1st 2010. That's way too long to wait.

Looks like the folks that made this movie would prefer that I not stream it. So it goes.

You can buy it here.

The Ninth

Posted by Justin | Comments (2) »

O hit the nail on the head. The Ninth configuration was just begging to be chosen for the next installment of Movie Night. Not that anyone ever watches it, but it's nice to have the option I guess.

So click here to open it up in a new window.

This is super extended definitive special edition director's cut of the movie. It clocks in at just under two hours. No bitching about it being too long, you weren't in a hurry anyway so just sit back and enjoy it.

Buscando a Reynols

Posted by Justin | Comments (0) »

Just to let you know, this isn't an April Fool's prank.

Way back in 2001 I was playing guitar in the worlds preeminent non-ironic theatrical metal band. We played lots of weird shows: among the more insane were The National Anarchist Convergence, the middle of a field literally in the middle of nowhere in an abandoned industrial park, and as the opening band for Reynols. Playing with Reynols was incredible. Not only are they incredible musicians, they are sincere lovers of hilarious sunglasses. I've forgotten more rock shows than most people ever attend, but I won't forget a second on any of the tunes they played. Huge epic noise and drone pieces performed almost entirely on home made minimalist instruments. Also, I'll never forget what Alna said to me after our first show together (in somewhat broken English): "I very much enjoyed your music. It inspired us to play very deeply" Yea, I know. Awesome right? Being around those guys inspired me to follow my musical inspirations no matter where they led.

Now that I've talked them up so much, I invite you to watch all 72 minutes of this Argentinian documentary about the band. It's in Spanish but features very good subtitles. So consider this the return of Movie Night!!!1!!one!!
